Brother est un fabricant japonais de machines-outils spécialisé dans les centres d'usinage CNC. L'entreprise, fondée en 1908, s'est initialement orientée vers les machines à coudre et l'électronique avant de développer sa propre gamme de centres d'usinage pour ses besoins internes de production. Brother propose des centres d'usinage de 3 à 5 axes destinés à la production en petite et grande série, notamment pour les secteurs de l'automobile et de l'équipement de bureau.
Un centre d'usinage combine plusieurs opérations (fraisage, perçage, alésage) en une seule machine à commande numérique, avec changement d'outil automatique pour une production continue et précise. Central en aéronautique, automobile, médical et sous-traitance de précision, partout où plusieurs opérations d'usinage doivent s'enchaîner sans reprise de pièce. Le prix va de 15 000-40 000 € pour un centre d'usinage vertical d'occasion à plusieurs centaines de milliers d'euros neuf pour un centre 5 axes haute performance. Durée de vie de 15 à 20 ans, la broche et le magasin d'outils étant les composants les plus critiques à entretenir. Nécessite une alimentation électrique triphasée forte puissance, un système de lubrification/arrosage, et un sol renforcé pour supporter le poids de la machine.
